About Immigration Medical Exams

A medical examination is part of the application process for obtaining entry and/or residency to the United States for individuals of all ages. Examination requirements are determined by age and immunization record. An adult examination (15 years or older) typically consists of the following:

  A physical examination

A tuberculin (TB) skin test is required for all persons 2 years or older. After the skin test is applied, you must return to clinic in 3 days for it to be read. A skin test is considered "positive" if there is a reaction of 5 mm or more. If you have a history of TB or a history of a positive TB skin test, a chest x-ray is required. Many patients have received BCG vaccination in their home country, but a skin test for TB is still required.  All persons with a question of active TB will be referred to the Arkansas State Health Department. If no documtation is available on the previous positive skin test, a blood test (Quantiferon TB/Tspot) can be ordered.

A blood test for syphilis (RPR), Gonorrhea
Routine immunizations such as chickenpox (varicella), MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) and tetanus-diphtheria are required, so bring any vaccination records available. These can be obtained at the Health department or local pharmacies.
A pediatric examination (children 14 years of age or younger) does not require blood testing but does require the following:
     o A physical examination
     o A TB skin test
o A review and update of routine pediatric immunizations
